This project was completed in 2012.
Reliability modeling and prognosis, and reliability-based design optimization require accurate models which are also extremely efficient computationally so that the statistical characterization of the vibration of complex structures such as entire vehicles can be performed quickly and repetitively during the analysis or design stages. However, models of realistic structures with a very large number of components to predict system-level effects are cumbersome and computationally expensive. We propose to develop the next generation of models: parametric reduced order models (PROMs).
The objective of this project is to develop novel, advanced modeling, simulation, design, signal processing and damage detection methods for structural dynamic analysis of vehicles. The effort addresses the challenges above and aims to enable reliability modeling and analysis and the development of innovative designs through new, computationally efficient methods of (noise, vibration, harshness) structural (re-)analysis. These capabilities contribute to health monitoring, prognosis, and condition-based maintenance technologies, and enable the design/analysis of reliable, high performance structures for light-weight, fuel efficient vehicles.
