Engage with Us
For Researchers from our Partner Schools
Our annual ARC Call for White Papers is announced every July. We welcome your innovative ideas that address our sponsor’s needs detailed in each Call.
For Companies and Government Agencies
There are four main ways for interested parties to engage with the ARC. In these forms of engagement, a focus is adding intellectual value to the pursuits of the faculty and students working in the ARC, within the context of the center’s mission and goals.
Member: Identify an ARC research topic or researcher of interest and contact us. We will connect you with the researcher to facilitate your participation as an industry member of the ARC project. U.S. Army GVSC goals in the project will be primary. Intellectual property rights follow federal funding guidelines and vests with the participating universities. This level of participation has zero direct cost to you.
Sponsor: Identify a research topic of interest to you which requires ARC expertise but is not in the ARC portfolio. We will connect you with ARC researchers of interest who can enter into a direct funding relationship with you. Intellectual property rights will be negotiated with the researcher’s university. This level of participation requires your sponsorship.
Affiliate: Identify a strategic partnership interest of your organization and the ARC. We will discuss the possibility for you to join the ARC Affiliates Program. Research topics in the program are selected by the industry affiliates. Partners pool resources to fund projects that leverage ARC research activities. Intellectual property rights will be negotiated with the ARC Affiliates Program. This level of participation requires financial membership contributions.
ARC Affiliates Program
With the ARC Affiliates Program, we offer access to cutting edge technology, recognized markets, and talented people. ARC performs basic research that is focused on military ground vehicle technologies. Members of the Affiliates Program benefit from technologies that have already passed the basic research stage, including autonomous driving, occupant safety, modular architectures, alternative powertrains, and intelligent management of fleets. Every research project in the ARC addresses a critical need identified by our sponsors U.S. Army CCDC GVSC and civilian industry. As such, both civilian industries and the Department of Defense are identified markets for products based on ARC technology. In addition, members have access to faculty and students at our partner universities to transfer ARC research into their products.
Projects for this program are solicited and selected by members of the Affiliates Program according to their needs and leverages mature ARC research. Members contribute an annual fee for their vote in the selection process with a minimum commitment of two years. This funding is pooled to support selected projects while maintaining competitive advantage for all members. Regular reporting and face-to-face meetings facilitate involvement of members in projects. Shared royalty-free non-exclusive license is granted to members for pooled projects. Private intellectual property options can be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Join us to experience the benefits of working with a team with a strong track record and excellent experience in creating new technologies to advance the goals of your company.
This is a new program that is under development. Please contact Prof. Bogdan Epureanu, ARC Director, if you have an interest in the Affiliates Program by emailing arc-partnerships@umich.edu.
License: Identify a technology developed in the ARC of interest to your organization. We will provide information regarding such technologies and facilitate contacts with the developers. Technologies created from past ARC research projects can be licensed through the technology transfer offices of our partner universities. Intellectual property rights will be negotiated with those universities. This level of participation requires financial agreements.

Intellectual Property (IP) of Shared Research
Member: The ARC partner university who develops the IP owns that IP. Member companies do not have automatic license to any of the ARC developed IP. Use of such IP requires licensing. If a member organization provides IP to an ARC project, then that IP is retained by the company who owns it.
Sponsor: The ARC partner university who develops the IP owns that IP. Sponsor organizations will enter into an agreement with the corresponding ARC partner university whereupon the organization typically receives a non-exclusive free license to all IP developed with their funds, with options to negotiate exclusivity with the specific university who owns the IP. GVSC is required to obtain a license to use IP developed with funds from sponsor organizations. If a sponsor organization provides IP to an ARC project, then that IP is retained by the company who owns it.
Affiliates: The ARC partner university who develops the IP owns that IP. Partner organizations will enter into an agreement with the University of Michigan and other ARC partner universities (where appropriate) whereupon the organization typically receives non-exclusive free license to all IP developed with their funds, with options to negotiate exclusivity with the specific university who owns the IP. All partner organizations will enter into a consortium agreement. GVSC is required to obtain a license to use IP developed with funds from ARC partners. If a partner organization provides IP to an ARC project, then that IP is retained by the company who owns it.

License: Licensing agreements can be made on a case-by-case basis between ARC partner universities who own the IP and organizations who wish to use that IP. There is no standard formula. We are committed to facilitate such agreements because our goal is to facilitate the transition of ARC technologies to commercial and government organizations.
